Betty Irene Haskell Bowcut Davies was born on December 7, 1934, to Merlin David and Irene Susan (Surrage) Haskell in Burley, Idaho. She attended the Burley schools and graduated from Burley High School in 1952. She married Jerry Max Bowcut soon after and had seven sons (kept trying for a daughter) over the following ten years. Her sons are Michael Jerry (Susan) Bowcut, Don Leslie (Nora) Bowcut, Steven Garris (Marie) Bowcut, Jim Dee Bowcut, David Reid (Valerie) Bowcut, John Clarence Bowcut, and Carl Lamar (Suanne) Bowcut.

After her divorce from Jerry, Mom worked full time while raising her sons and attended night school at Brigham Young University to get a BS in psychology. Her example earned her family’s never-ending admiration and taught her boys that they too could do difficult things. Mom’s life exemplified the value of dedication to family, hard work, and the value of education. To her boys, she indeed seemed like “Wonder Woman.” She instilled in each of them respect for what a dedicated and determined woman can accomplish.

Mom married Verl Davies in 1977 and gladly took his two children, Brett Dee Davies and Janalyn McNeil (Todd), into her heart (she finally had her daughter). Her professional career began as a parole officer with Utah Adult Probation and Parole. It ended as Director of Diagnostics of the Utah Board of Corrections. She loved music (teaching choir and piano much of her life), quilting, bird watching, travel, church service, and (most of all) her ever-expanding family. She did not just endure the countless band concerts, children’s plays, choir, orchestra, or storytelling performances; rather, she was eager to attend an upcoming performance by one of her grandchildren. She could always be found sitting in the audience beaming with pride.

Mom was a gifted and talented quiltmaker. Her large family and many friends were the primary beneficiaries of her love for creating elaborate quilts. She loved to find just the right color scheme and fabric pattern to express her love for her family members. Just as her love and influence will keep our hearts tender, her quilting handiwork will keep us warm and comfortable for many years to come.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers David Kay (Sharon) Haskell and Danny Phillips, and her beloved husband, Verl. She is survived by siblings from her mother’s second marriage Clarence (Julie) Phillips Jr., Ida (Vern) Wilkinson, and JoAnn Hurst, and all of her children.

Mom, we will forever miss your guidance and love and strive to the lofty goal of being at least half the parent that you were.
