Marie Joan Ferre Young, age 84, peacefully returned to her heavenly family, Wednesday evening, March 3, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born December 2, 1936 to Noal and Caddie Pace Ferre in Vineyard, Utah. She was the eleventh of twelve children.

Marie had fond memories of growing up in Orem where she loved to spend time on the farm with her family. She enjoyed driving the tractor and would of done anything to be outside with her dad. She always looked forward to when it was time to prune the orchard and burn the limbs for their annual Ferre family weenie roast. She graduated from Lincoln High School. She married Robert L. Baum, February 24, 1956. They raised two children, son Bret M. Baum and daughter JoAnn Proctor. They later divorced and Marie married Merlin F. Young October 29, 1977 in Elko, Nevada. Their marriage was soon after solemnized in the Jordan River Latter-Day Saint Temple.

Marie was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She quietly served in all of her callings so humbly and beautifully. Her testimony of the Savior was demonstrated through her complete devotion to serving others. Often you would find her driving someone to a doctor appointment, baking, bottling or making treats to deliver to someone in need, or doing temple work weekly. The many miles on her car, represent, only a few of many lives she touched, through her countless hours of service to her family, friends and neighbors.

Marie’s greatest happiness in life came from her role as mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She put her heart into making her grandkids happy. They will always remember their treasured time with grandma going out to eat, playing baseball with her in the yard, eating her delicious homemade treats, baking together in the kitchen, reading bed-time stories, and especially her heart-felt hugs.

She is survived by: her children Bret Baum, JoAnn (Bill) Proctor; grandchildren Cory (Gina) Hardy, Chad (Jamee) Hardy, Rachelle (Taylor) Brian, Brad Baum, Lindsey Baum; 9 great grandchildren; siblings Lawrence Ferre, Hazel Bowman, and Valeen Giles. She was preceded in death by her parents, 9 siblings and Danielle Bills, granddaughter.

Messages from members of the Park 8th Ward:

Yevon Romney:
"Marie is a special friend who I have loved and admired for many years. She was a stalwart in the church and served with love and compassion. I love this dear sister and we will pray for her and her family."

Judy Christensen:
"Wow, I just heard. I walked out of church with her recently and told her of the fond memories our family has of her. Our first home was across the street from her and she knew Steve and Me before we had any children. She watched our children grow up and was so sweet to them. She made home made licorice and cherry caramels for us and we loved it so much that she got the ingredients together and gave us the recipe so we could learn to make it. That was so fun. I remember Marie was so good to her grandchildren as well. We have many stories and will surely miss her.”

Diane Taylor:
"She was the best lady to work with. Always so calm, efficient, and positive!”

Sarah Young:
"She was always a giver, not a taker. A worker, not a shirker. A calm, collected, dignified lady! Quietly and fiercely independent; not ever a complainer. She’s a one of a kind! And she leaves a hole in our hearts, and our neighborhood

Kelli Johnson:
"Marie and I served at the MTC together many many years ago. I am greatful to get to know her back then and I am greatful for her warm friendship she shared with me each time we saw each other at church or at a grocery store. I pray that her family will feel peace and love from our Father and will miss you my friend!!”

Jenny Stay:

I will miss my dear Marie, greatly! My family was lucky enough to move next door to her, over eight years ago. Words cannot express how much Marie has meant to me and my family. I will miss our long conversations we had almost every week and the friendly wave every time we would see each other. I will miss you greatly, Marie. You have made me a better person! Until I see you again, I will always love you my friend, neighbor, and adopted Grandma!

So many incredible memories with grandma… Where to even begin? When getting to visit at grandmas house, I’m going to miss the Long deep chats that we would have, sometimes even going late into the hours after grandma’s bedtime, (shshsh) don’t tell grandma that I told on us. :)
There’s an art to listening. It’s the ability to hear more than what’s being said. To understand the meaning in every pause, and to be able to offer the answers that makes someone feel truly heard. Grandma was definitely an artist when it came to listening. She has been such a big influence in my life, and I just really hope that I too someday can be as good of a listener, supporter, and safe place to go to when needed, for so many others, just like she was for so many people, including myself.
Grandma, thank you so much for the lifetime of such wonderful memories that I will cherish forever.
Grandma forever 39 you will be 💙
Love you always, your loving granddaughter, Lindsey.

I'll remember Marie with fondness. She was a kind and sharing person. We moved in across the street from her when we were a young married couple beginning our family. She welcomed us and our children as they came. The winter after we moved in was especially snowy, so to repay her kindness I would go over and shovel her walk. I had only done that a couple of times when one morning as I opened the door to clear them again, Marie was already up to my porch having already cleared my driveway and walk. I'll miss her and her beautiful smile.
