Shirlee Rae Gourley Mitchell, 94, passed away in her home in Orem on July 18, 2022.
Shirlee was born March 9, 1928, in Eureka, Utah, to her parents Verda and George Gourley. Shirlee was preceded in death by her husband Paul Robert Mitchell and her son Sanderson Alex Mitchell. She is survived by her son David G. Mitchell of Lehi, Utah; daughter Paulette Fenton (Mike) of Elk Ridge, Utah; son Daniel R. Mitchell of Sandy, Utah; son Stacey J. Mitchell (Kay) of Springville, Utah; daughter Nanci J. Horrocks (Mike) of Blackfoot, Idaho; Jefferson D. Mitchell (Suzanne) of Mapleton, Utah; and son Jay S. Mitchell (Karen) of Midvale, Utah. As well as 21 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Shirlee attended schools in Eureka through the 8th grade and loved performing in the school marching band. She then moved with her family to Provo where she graduated from B Y High School and was active in the school student council as Student Body Vice President.
Shirlee met her husband Paul in Provo, and, after a short courtship, they were married in 1948 in Provo. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.
Shirlee loved to sew and crochet and spent many hours making clothes, blankets, and warm hats for her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time in the summer with her family at Strawberry reservoir in the family hunting cabin. She was also active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in Primary, Relief Society, and other organizations. She often said that her favorite calling was as the Cub Scout den mother where the children loved her fun personality. Genealogy was a passion for both her and Paul. She enjoyed researching and teaching others the joys of genealogy. Shirlee enjoyed sports as a spectator and rarely missed any of her children’s games. Later in life, you could always find her watching BYU football and professional golf with her son Danny.
Our Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and Great-Great-Grandma will be missed by all of us who loved her. We will see her again.
